Chapter Thirty-Two

Alicia

“How are we going to find anything in this library?” I ask, tapping my finger against my elbow in a nervous rhythm.

“Yeah,” Olivia huffs. “It would have been nice if you had mentioned it was huge.”

“Would you have liked me to give you the exact measurements of a room no humans have been in for seven centuries?” Dante growls.

I glance between the two of them and frown, feeling a twinge of guilt. I know that I didn’t handle the whole snake thing well. I was so focused on not using my mage powers that I didn’t stop to consider the plans I was coming up with. Or consider that they could have gotten hurt.

For a minute, they were only pawns in my game. Expendable as long as I reached my goal in the end.

I shudder, wondering what possibly came over me.

“Do you even know what we’re supposed to be looking for?” Hector asks crossly.

“I would suspect a book,” Eugene drawls from where he is leaning casually against the wall by the door. “But then what do I know?”

Jane walks further in, a dreamy expression on her face. “It’s magnificent,” she murmurs. I wonder if she’s ever seen this many books in one place.

I’m not even sure if I have seen this many books in one place and we have a very large library at Hareton Hall.

Jane pauses by the nearest shelf and grasps the black ratty spine of a large book.

“No, Jane, don’t touch the books!” Dante shouts, surging forward, but it’s too late.

With a scream she goes flying backwards, slamming into Dante as he lunges to catch her.

“What happened to her?” Hector cries, rushing forward as Dante sets Jane on the ground and holds up her right hand to inspect it. He gently spreads her fingers out.

My hand flies to my mouth. The skin of her hand is charred, covered in various red patches. Blood oozes out between the strips of ruined flesh.

“What happened to her?” Olivia screeches.

“Don’t touch the books,” Dante says, through his teeth. “The faeries have them enchanted to protect them from theft.”

“And you knew this beforehand?” Olivia demands, her eyebrows pulling together.

Dante gives her a pointed look. “I was raised by the most knowledge hungry man in all of Amar. I picked up a thing or two.”

“Why are you only just now telling us about the books?” Hector demands as he cradles Jane carefully. She’s curled into a ball whimpering.

Dante shrugs. “I was about to.”

Eugene pushes away from the door, shaking his finger at Chandler. “Don’t touch anything.” He kneels next to Jane. “Next time do it faster, mate. I could have touched a book.”

Dante shoots him a hard look. “Like you’ve ever willingly touched a book in your whole life.”

I cough as I glance at the bookshelves. Instead of the wonderful gifts of knowledge than I had originally thought they were, now they look a lot more like death traps. ”I could have touched a book.”

Dante looks up sharply. “I wouldn’t have let you.
